Letters to the Windsor Star they did not publish

Unpublished Letter to the Windsor Star, May 4, 2009

Thank you Councillor Halberstadt for your fully justified disciplining of a Mayor who has completely forgotten that he was elected to represent the public.

While this city is facing a tsunami of misfortune we are faced with outrageously priced services, rotting infrastructure and a Mayor who cannot accept a democratic vote. He also continues to waste millions of tax dollars on a political fight with the Ambassador Bridge Company.

Ignoring real priorities, here are some of the costly “visions”he has brought down from the mountaintop.

Multi-million Dollar Canals, International Airports, Symphony Halls, Tunnels & Arenas

These and delusional heritage designations are his priorities for using precious tax dollars to promote his personal agenda. He uses every opportunity to exclude taxpayers who provide those dollars from any participation in the democratic process. Secrecy is his watchword. A weak and dysfunctional council has no stomach for active opposition to the Mayor’s arrogant behaviour resulting in ever increasing legal fees and feasibility studies. Councillor Halberstadt has mustered the intestinal fortitude to publicly oppose the status quo, only to be spurned and insulted by the Mayor and his acolytes.

The Mayor is Chairman of the Board of Enwin Utilities, where millions of dollars have been lost. He has deliberately kept the details secret. This company now appears to be wholly sustained by acting as a glorified bookkeeper for the Windsor Utilities Commission, at an annual fee of a little under $10,000,000. The Enwin situation has the appearance of deception, increasing the cost of utilities and reducing realty taxes. There is also a question as to the harmonisation of Enwin’s staff with those of the WUC.
Taxpayers deserve a forensic audit and a detailed public explanation without delay.
